Question Installing and Configuring ASP.NET

Hello Imar and all

I am back at my database stage again after virtually giving up for some months, buying a new computer and virtually starting again. Having now got back in with a new computer I am on Windows 7 and VWD 2010 Express because that is what Microsoft now offer. I have also chosen to go with my database in SQL Server Express 2008 R2, as opposed to the inbuilt SQL server within VWD, because I really felt that I got burnt last time I tried that on my old XP machine. That has led me to be following the instructions in Chapter 18 and Appendix B.

On page 647 I am trying to follow through the instructions to link IIS and ASP.NET. When I type aspnet_regiis -i and press Enter I get, after a minute or so, the error message - 0x80004005 Unspecified error.

I am on Windows 7 Home Premium OS.

Any suggestions please.

With thanks in anticipation

That's a vague error message and thus it's hard for me to say something about it. 0x80004005 typically means security problems.

Maybe Google knows more:

Unhappy Now getting administrative rights error

Dear Imar

Thank you for your pointers. Unfortunately no success there, but I have moved on.

As the book I was using is your older one, I wondered whether the instructions I was using were out of date, in my context of now being on Windows 7 and ASP.NET 4.0. I therefore went today and bought a copy of your updated book, now covering ASP.NET 4.0 and Windows 7. It did prove that I was using the wrong directory to execute my aspnet statement from. BUT Now I am getting a new error which is much clearer but surprises me -

Code:
0x8007b799 - You must have administrator rights on this machine in order to run this tool.
I am the administrator, so where should I look to do any further setting of administrative rights?

Please help.

Philip

Hi Philip,

If you are using User Account Control (UAC, which is on by default), you need to start the command prompt with elevated permissions as explained in the book.

Click Start, type CMD and then press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to start the command prompt with elevated permissions Alternatively, click Start, type CMD and then right click the CMD / Command Prompt item and choose Run as Administrator.

Hope this helps,

Imar

Red face Thank you

Hi Imar

Thank you for that. I am very sorry that I missed seeing that point. Just a friendly suggestion for the next book, think about bolding such crucial 'different' key sequences, please.

Philip
