Default ERROR: Oracle not available

Hi!!

    I recently installed oracle 8i on my pc(Win xp).When i logged on for the first time, I logged on using default username(scott) and default password(tiger)....but now when i try to log on using the sane username and password, it displays the following error:

ORA-01034: Oracle not available

   wat should i do to get rid of this error????please help me!!!!.

Can you connect as system or sys on oracle ?

Hi

   Thanks for reply!! nyways how can i check that i am able to connect to oracle as 'sys' or not??....well i tried to run sqlplus(sql editor) from command prompt as follows:-(oracle is inastalled in e:\)

e:>sqlplus/nolog
sql>connect scott/tiger as sysdba

it displayed me the following error on doing so:-
ORA-12560: TNS protocol adapter error

   now tell me what to do further??? please continue helping me!!!

The error you got Oracle not available could be because The SGA requires more space than was allocated for it or The Operating-System variable pointing to the instance is improperly defined, well, thats too technical so forget it, when you start SQL PLUS go to Services in Administrative Tools in Control Panel and check whether these services are running Oracle TNS Listener and Oracle Service[name of the database which you must have given at the time of installation. I hope this solves your problem.......
