Problem of novice mysql user

I am new to Mysql
I installed mysql server & client (version: 3...) on my xp
winmysqladministration shows that my default user is ODBC
when i use the command:
> use mysql;

there displays an error that i have not proper permission.
how I get my root password
Please help me

I have a better open source application for mysql dbs.
Try using MySQL-Front.
I have the older version 2.5 that still works for me until now.
