Default data migration issues

does anybody know what type of database uses a ".dat" extension? i'm developing a system for a company that will be using sql server and they want me to convert data from the system they were using which was developed for them by another programmer in the early 90's. the old system was implemented in DOS. thanks in advance for the help.

".dat" is the extension for the data files. So it is not secifically defined by a database.

Go to www.openlinksw.com and download their universal odbc drivers for gupta, sqlbase, sql, ms access and whatever else you need. See if these help you open the .DAT files.
