Default data migration issues

does anybody know what type of database uses a ".dat" extension? i'm developing a system for a company that will be using sql server but they want me to convert data from the system they were using which was developed for them by another programmer in the early 90's. the old system was implemented in DOS. thanks in advance for the help.

We use .dat file extension names for Btrieve files. I did a quick check however by renaming the .dat extension and was still able to access the file using Btrieve. We use Pervasive 2000 to manage these Btrieve files.
